UNBREAKABLE (2000)

by arion @ 2006-04-14 - 07:40:33

unbreakable

'It's allright to be afraid, David, because this part won't be like a comic book. Real life doesn't fit into little boxes that were drawn for it.'

My favourite superhero movie which doesnt really have a superhero with otherwordly powers. M Night Shyamalan's self indulgent foray into the life of a Philadelphia security guard who is the sole survivor of a train crash and subsequently realises his true calling in life after a series of interactions with a brittle wheelchair ridden comic book addict.Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson do a great job and have able support from Robin Wright Penn and Spencer Treat Clark. The tale is a deconstruction of comic books which brings the fantastical into the realm of reality. Comic cynics may just toss the film aside as one with the X men, Spiderman and other comic adaptations. But Shyamalan's true intent is to make the viewer comprehend the importance of the comic and graphic novel medium by rooting it into reality with a pinch of the supernatural.

Unbreakable is a cinematic pile of cowdung, only slightly better than the truly atrocious "The Village".

" One man's dull and mundane existence...is another man's Technicolor"
STRANGE DAYS

Well, I guess Cinema just like Art is an expression of emotion and is subjective when it comes to criticism.
I did enjoy Unbreakable and to be honest I loved The Village even more ( With all due respect I really don't think that 99% of the audience would have figured out the ending ) and you must admit Shyamalan does have his own unique style.
'pile of cowdung' may be a harsh phrase, but than again to each his own.

Yeah, i was being a bit harsh but M Night seems to be doing a pastiche of Hitchcock in an even less subtle way than De Palma (who has himself produced some real stinkers). I think with Shayamalan there's no middle ground - you either love him or hate him, unfortunately i'm definitely in the latter. His films have always struck me asa gimmick in search of a plot rather than a oherent work of cinema.
